If you look at the back of any commercial dog or cat food bag, you will see a panel called the "Guaranteed Analysis." This panel legally requires manufacturers to list minimum percentages for Crude Protein and Crude Fat, and maximum percentages for Crude Fiber and Moisture. However, notice what is conspicuously missing? Carbohydrates. There is no legal requirement in the pet food industry to disclose the carbohydrate content on the label. This allows some substandard diets to mask their heavy reliance on cheap fillers like corn, wheat, and soy.

Wet food typically contains about 75-80% moisture (water), while dry kibble contains only around 10%. To make an accurate "apples-to-apples" comparison, we must calculate the nutritional values on a Dry Matter (DM) basis, meaning we mathematically remove all the water completely.
