Why NFE Matters?

Manufacturers aren't required to list carbohydrates. NFE (Nitrogen-Free Extract) is the estimated carb content. High carbs can contribute to obesity and diabetes in pets.

What is NFE (Carbohydrates)?

Pet food labels aren't required to list carbohydrates. We calculate it as NFE (Nitrogen Free Extract) by subtracting protein, fat, fiber, moisture, and ash from 100%. High carbs (over 30-40%) can lead to obesity and diabetes in pets.

Why Dry Matter matters?

Wet food looks like it has less protein than dry food because it's mostly water! Removing the moisture (calculating Dry Matter base) allows you to accurately compare the true nutrients between wet diets, raw diets, and dry kibble.

Decoding Pet Food Labels: The Hidden Truth About Carbohydrates

What Pet Food Manufacturers Won't Tell You

If you look at the back of any commercial dog or cat food bag, you will see a panel called the "Guaranteed Analysis." This panel legally requires manufacturers to list minimum percentages for Crude Protein and Crude Fat, and maximum percentages for Crude Fiber and Moisture. However, notice what is conspicuously missing? Carbohydrates. There is no legal requirement in the pet food industry to disclose the carbohydrate content on the label. This allows some substandard diets to mask their heavy reliance on cheap fillers like corn, wheat, and soy.

pie_chartNFE (Nitrogen Free Extract): Exposing the Hidden Carbs

Because carbohydrates aren't listed directly, veterinary nutritionists use a mathematical formula called NFE (Nitrogen Free Extract) to estimate the carbohydrate content. By subtracting the percentages of protein, fat, fiber, moisture, and ash from 100%, we are left with the approximate carbohydrate percentage.

While dogs are omnivorous and can tolerate moderate amounts of carbohydrates, cats are obligate carnivores. This means their bodies are strictly designed to derive energy from high-protein, meat-based diets. Feeding a diet consisting of 40% or 50% carbohydrates to a cat places extreme metabolic stress on their system, significantly increasing the risk of feline diabetes and obesity. The PetFoodIQ Kibble Decoder automatically calculates this critical NFE value for you.

water_dropWhy Dry Matter Basis is the Only Fair Comparison

Have you ever compared dry kibble to canned wet food? At first glance, a can of wet food might show only 8% crude protein, while dry kibble shows 30%. Does this mean dry food is three times more nutritious? Not at all.

Wet food typically contains about 75-80% moisture (water), while dry kibble contains only around 10%. To make an accurate "apples-to-apples" comparison, we must calculate the nutritional values on a Dry Matter (DM) basis, meaning we mathematically remove all the water completely. Once calculated on a DM basis, that 8% protein wet food actually reveals itself to have over 40% protein on a dry matter basisโ€”often far outperforming standard dry kibble. Our Kibble Decoder handles this complex conversion instantly.

lightbulbHow to Use the Kibble Decoder Effectively

To get the most accurate results, locate the Guaranteed Analysis panel on your pet food bag and input the exact percentages listed. If your bag does not list "Ash" (which represents essential minerals), our calculator safely uses a standard industry estimate of 7.5% for dry foods. Use this tool not just for your current food, but to compare brands when considering a diet switch. A lower NFE score generally indicates a more biologically appropriate, meat-rich diet.

Ash represents the essential minerals (calcium, phosphorus, etc.) left over if the food were completely burned. If it's not listed on the label, 7-8% is the industry standard average for dry kibble.

Cats are obligate carnivores and thrive on very low carbs (under 10-15%). Dogs are omnivorous and can handle more, but generally, high-quality dog foods aim for under 30-35% carbohydrates.

Whole meat (like "Chicken") contains a lot of water weight. "Meat Meal" (like "Chicken Meal") has had the water removed, making it a much more concentrated source of protein.

While protein is crucial, extremely high protein diets aren't necessary for every pet and can sometimes be hard on kidneys in senior pets. Quality matters more than quantity.
