The Hidden Truth: How to Read Pet Food Labels and NFE

Why Pet Food Labels Are Confusing

Pet food marketing is designed to appeal to human emotions, not to communicate genuine nutritional value. Phrases like "grain-free," "natural," and "premium" have no standardized legal definition in the pet food industry. The only reliable source of nutritional information is the Guaranteed Analysis panel and the ingredient list.

Decoding the Guaranteed Analysis

The Guaranteed Analysis shows minimum percentages of crude protein and fat, and maximum percentages of crude fiber and moisture. But these numbers are on an "as-fed" basis โ€” meaning they include water weight, which can be misleading when comparing dry and wet foods.

To compare foods fairly, always convert to Dry Matter Basis (DMB): DMB % = (As-Fed %) รท (1 - Moisture%) ร— 100

Example: A wet food listing 8% protein with 78% moisture: DMB = 8 รท (1 - 0.78) ร— 100 = 36.4%

What is NFE?

You need to look for NFE (Nitrogen-Free Extract) to estimate the carbohydrate content โ€” because carbohydrates are NOT required to be listed on pet food labels.

NFE = 100 - (Protein % + Fat % + Fiber % + Moisture % + Ash %)

High NFE values (above 40% DMB) in dog food can lead to obesity, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes in predisposed breeds. For cats โ€” obligate carnivores โ€” high-carbohydrate diets are particularly problematic.

Reading the Ingredient List

Ingredients are listed by weight before processing ("as-fed" weight). This means water-heavy ingredients like fresh chicken may appear first, but after cooking, protein from grains may dominate. Look for named protein meals ("chicken meal," "salmon meal") high on the list as indicators of genuine protein concentration.

Red flags in the ingredient list:

  • "Meat by-products" โ€” no indication of which animal or which parts
  • Excess grains high on the list โ€” corn syrup, wheat middlings near the top
  • Artificial preservatives โ€” BHA, BHT, Ethoxyquin

Use our Kibble Decoder to automatically calculate NFE and evaluate your current pet food.
